Wat Tham Rong Tourist Attraction | Phetchaburi Province
Wat Tham Rong is a private temple belonging to the Mahayana Buddhist sect, located on Tham Rong Mountain in Tham Rong Subdistrict, Ban Lat District, Phetchaburi Province. It is notable for the chain binding the ankles of the statue of Luang Pho Dam. Wat Tham Rong was built in 1782 and received its royal charter in 1812. The current ordination hall was built in 1961.
Tham Rong is a relatively small cave located in a community near the Tham Rong Subdistrict Municipality.
Entering Tham Rong is easy; there's no need to climb or ascend and descend a hill. The entrance to the cave is flat and shaded by trees.
The mountain with Tham Rong has many stories and legends associated with this area from the past. Suton writes about a journey back approximately 1,000-1,300 years. It is believed that this area was once a dense forest with three mountains. Wat Tham Rong has a beautiful stucco-patterned ordination hall, a masterpiece of Phetchaburi craftsmanship. Tham Rong houses Luang Pho Dam, an ancient Buddha image revered by the community. There is also a learning center for palm tree wisdom, or Uncle Thanom's Palm Garden. Palm trees are planted in rows like an orchard, a deliberate effort to conserve the palm tree, a symbol of Phetchaburi that is becoming increasingly rare. Ban Yiton makes palm sugar sweets and boils palm sugar, continuing the Phetchaburi palm tree tradition. It features a large traditional Thai house where a group of elderly people weave palm leaves into various shapes. The Bamboo Weaving Village showcases the weaving of bamboo into various household items. Wat Muang Ngam and the Antique Museum display tools and artifacts reflecting the community's past way of life. The Ban Rong community has received awards for improving traffic safety on its roads and has incorporated this into a cycling tour route, allowing visitors to enjoy the community atmosphere and learn about local wisdom. Tourists interested in watching palm tree climbing and palm sugar boiling can also visit. Learn to cook dishes and make desserts using palm fruit, and visit a guava orchard featuring the Phet Suphan and Thapthim Chan varieties. Transportation and a guide are provided.
