Things to Do Inside the Temple
Phra Borommathat Thung Yang (Phra Mahathat Chedi):
This ancient, round, Sri Lankan-style chedi contains the relics of the Lord Buddha.
The chedi has a three-tiered, square base, with smaller chedis at the four corners.
It underwent major restoration during the reign of King Rama III, and the golden spire was restored by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in 2568.
Vihara Luang:
Located in front of the chedi, it features Lanna-style architecture. It has been renovated over many eras.
Legends Connecting Three Temples:
Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang has a legend related to the past visit of the Lord Buddha, along with two nearby temples, Wat Phra Yuen Phutthabat Yukon and Wat Phra Thaen Sila At, which are important beliefs of the people of Uttaradit.
Important Traditions
Wat Phra Borommathat Thung Yang is the venue for important local traditions, including:
Salak Phat Festival: Held annually on the 8th waning moon of the 6th lunar month.
Atthami Puja Day: The temple holds a reenactment of the royal cremation of the Lord Buddha. This is a magnificent and very interesting display.
