Tham Phra Phosat Cave Temple: A Treasure Trove of Archaeology and the Beauty of Kaeng Khoi
Tham Phra Phosat Cave Temple, located in Thap Kwang Subdistrict, Kaeng Khoi District, Saraburi Province, is a temple renowned for its tranquil atmosphere, surrounded by valleys and lush nature. It is not only a shady meditation center, but also an important archaeological site, hiding a long history within the caves.
Importance and Attractions
The temple's most significant feature is the Tham Phra Phosat Cave, which houses priceless artifacts: bas-relief carvings on the cave walls.
Ancient Dvaravati Carvings: These carvings date from the 13th to 15th centuries (over 1,000 years ago). They depict Hindu-Brahmanic figures Shiva and Vishnu. Paying homage to the Buddha, who is sitting in the posture of preaching the Dharma, is an important evidence of the coexistence of the two religions in this region and reflects the superb craftsmanship of the Dvaravati period.
Caves within the temple grounds: In addition to the Bodhisattva Cave, there are other interesting caves, such as the Phra Thammaduta Cave, the Lumbini Cave, and the Songat Chedi Cave, each with its own unique beauty of stalactites and stalagmites.
White Ubosot in the Valley: The pristine white Ubosot, standing tall against the lush green forest and limestone mountains, is a unique and beautiful sight, attracting many tourists for memorable photos.
Jor Por Ror Waterfall: This waterfall is named after the initials of King Rama V during his visit in 1896. However, the waterfall only flows during the rainy season when the water level is high.
History
Wat Tham Phra Bodhisattva is a Vipassana meditation temple hidden amidst nature for a long time. But what makes the temple widely known is the discovery of ancient Dvaravati period carvings, reflecting the area's importance as a transportation route and the spread of Buddhism in the past.
