Wat Mahathat Worawihan @Ratchaburi | Ratchaburi Province
Wat Mahathat Worawihan @Ratchaburi | Ratchaburi Province
It is assumed that it was built in the Dvaravati period, around the same time as the construction of the old city of Ratchaburi. A Khmer or Lopburi style castle was built on top of it, around the beginning of the 18th Buddhist century, to be the center of the city, according to the beliefs of the Khmer universe. Later, the castle that was built may have collapsed, so a new prang was built in the early Ayutthaya period. The current architectural style is on top of it. Inside the temple, there are interesting things, such as the Royal Vihara, which enshrines Phra Mongkhon Buri, a stucco Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya attitude, in the early Ayutthaya art style. The face is Sukhothai style, the body is long, the knees are short, and the face is facing east. Behind it, another Buddha image is built with the back facing each other, named Phra Si Nat, facing west. The construction of the Buddha image in this manner means praying for help to protect from disasters in front and behind, called Phra Raksa Muang, according to the beliefs of people in the Ayutthaya period.
