History of Nakhon Luang Castle
It is assumed that Nakhon Luang Castle was built during the reign of King Songtham as a royal residence during his visits to pay homage to the Buddha's footprint in Saraburi and Lopburi. Later, in 1631, during the reign of King Prasat Thong, he commissioned craftsmen to replicate the design of Prasat Mueang Angkor in Cambodia and construct a brick and mortar residence. Later, in 1809, Tapakhao Pin built Wat Nakhon Luang, along with four Buddha footprints on the castle's upper terrace. Since then, Nakhon Luang Castle has become part of the temple complex, steeped in history and value, and has been registered as an ancient site by the Fine Arts Department.
Located on the east bank of the Pa Sak River in Nakhon Luang Subdistrict, it was originally the king's residence during his visits to pay homage to the Buddha's footprint in Saraburi and as a resting place during his visits to Lopburi.
Another important religious site in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province
It is a remarkable blend of Thai and Khmer art. Originally, it served as a royal residence for the king during his visits to Lopburi to pay homage to the Phra Phutthabat in Saraburi. It is believed to have been built during the reign of King Songtham, but was constructed of brick and mortar during the reign of King Prasat Thong in 1604.
The King commissioned a photographer to photograph the stone sanctuary of 'Phra Nakhon Luang,' also known as Sri Yasodharapura or Angkor Wat, in Cambodia, to celebrate the reinstatement of Cambodia if construction were not completed.
The Tapha Khao Pins came to build Wat Nakhon Luang nearby. They created four footprints and enshrined them in the top pavilion. These four footprints are stacked one on top of the other, with deep depressions in the rock. The largest is approximately 2.50 meters wide and 5.50 meters long.
On the gable, there is an inscription indicating that it was restored in 122 B.E. (2446 B.E.), during the reign of King Rama V. Stroll and admire the skill of ancient Thai craftsmen who painstakingly constructed the entire castle entirely from brick. Situated on a man-made hill, the castle was filled with earth to create an impressive height. It houses 30 chedis resembling Khmer chedis with 20 wooden niches.
There is also a curved gallery in Khmer art, connecting each prang, which craftsmen have carved into the shape of a solid balustrade. The Nakhon Luang Palace, also known as San Phra Chan Loi, is a four-sided building restored during the reign of King Rama V. Phra Palat (Pluem) or Phra Khru Wihan-Kijjanun brought a round granite slab, approximately 2 meters in diameter and 6 inches thick, called Phra Chan Loi.
From Wat Thep Chan Loi in nearby Nakhon Luang District, it is enshrined. This registered historical site offers a peaceful and educational atmosphere.
