The island is divided into 2 parts with inhabitants: "Koh Lao Na Nok", where most of the villagers are Moken (Urak Lawoi) and have houses made from natural materials that protrude into the sea. And "Koh Lao Nai", where most of the villagers are Muslims and work as shrimp paste producers. This place is considered one of the best sources of shrimp paste in Thailand. Visiting Koh Lao is a way of traveling to the sea in an ecological way.
Koh Lao Na Nok, a community of Moken people, an ethnic group known for their solitude above all else due to their nomadic lifestyle in the past. It is also a community that produces Koh Lao shrimp paste, the best shrimp paste in Ranong, a famous OTOP product of Ranong Province.
