Wat Suan Dok or Wat Buppharam is located on Suthep Road, Suthep Subdistrict, Mueang District, Chiang Mai Province, approximately 1 kilometer from Suan Dok Gate. In the past, this place was a flower garden for the northern princes of the Mangrai Dynasty.
In 1914, King Kuena, the 6th king of the Mangrai Dynasty, graciously ordered the construction of a “royal temple” to be the residence of Phra Maha Thera Suman, who established the Sri Lankan Buddhism sect in the Lanna region, and built a pagoda to enshrine the Buddha’s relics.
The large Sri Lankan-style pagoda is a large pagoda containing the Buddha’s relics. It is 24 wa high and was built in 1914 during the reign of King Kuena. It is a beautiful blend of Sri Lankan and Lanna art.
Phra Chao Kao Tue is a large cast Buddha statue made of bronze. Chiang Saen art by Lanna and Sukhothai craftsmen, Mara-Vijaya posture, built during the reign of Phra Muang Kaew in 2047 B.E. to be the principal Buddha image in the Phra Singh temple. When it was finished, it could not be towed into the city because it was too heavy, so the king's royal residence was donated as a temple.
Kru Ba Chao Siwichai Shrine is the place where the ashes of Kru Ba Chao Siwichai, the saint of Lanna, are enshrined. It was built in 2490 B.E. to commemorate the time when Kru Ba Siwichai restored Wat Suan Dok in 2474-2475 B.E.
