Wat Intharawihan Phra Wihan Luang (Bang Khun Phrom)
There are many Buddhist temples in Bangkok for Buddhists in Bangkok to visit and pay homage to the sacred objects. "Wat Intharawihan, Royal Monastery" or "Wat Luang Pho To" is one of the most popular temples. Today, we will take everyone to visit "5 places not to miss checking in" of Wat Intharawihan to please tourists who like to visit temples, monasteries and ancient sites or general tourists who are interested in visiting. And importantly, tourists
In Wat Intharawihan is the holy water well of "Somdet Phra Phutthachan (To Phrommarangsi)" or "Somdet To". He was a famous monk in the Rattanakosin period. Before he became the abbot of Wat Rakhang Khositaram Worawihan, he lived in this temple. Later, in the year 2321, which was during the Thonburi period, Nakhon Si Sattahip, ruled by King Siribunsarn, led an army to invade the area of Ban Don Mot Kaeng and arrested Phra Lo and executed him, which made King Thonburi angry. Since Phra Lo had already pledged allegiance to the King of Thonburi,
Therefore, the execution of Phra Lo was considered a declaration of being an enemy of the King of Thonburi.
The King of Thonburi therefore organized an army under the command of Somdet Chao Phraya Mahakasat and Phra Surasee to march up to suppress the army of King Siribunsarn. The two generals were able to successfully defeat the army of King Siribunsarn.
However, they were unable to capture King Siribunsarn because he had left the city and sought refuge in Vietnam first.
After the renovation of the new temple was completed, the Lord Abbot Aranyikathera (Duang) was invited to be the abbot of this temple to manage the monks and internal affairs of the temple.
The Lord Abbot Aranyikathera (Duang) was known as someone who excelled in meditation and was kind. Which is the same as the reign of King Rama III. During this time, the villagers called this temple “Wat In” or “Wat Intharam” after Chao Inthawong who renovated it.
Later, during the reign of King Rama V, His Majesty ordered the construction of a road through the middle of Wat Khun Phrom. As a result, Wat Bang Khun Phrom had to be divided into 2 parts, which later became 2 temples:
Wat Bang Khun Phrom Nok (now Wat Mai Amataros) and Wat Bang Khun Phrom Nai (now Wat Intharawihan Royal Monastery). This temple is located in the area of the Devawesm Palace, which His Majesty ordered to be rebuilt. Therefore, the temple is called “Wat Bang Khun Phrom Nai”.
Later, in 1927, during the reign of King Rama VI, the Sangha received a royal command to change the name of the temple because the original name The “Wat Inthararam” currently in use is the same as the name of Wat Inthararam (South) at Bang Yi Ruea Tai (Thonburi).
This caused Somdej Phra Wachirananwong (M.R.W. Chuen Nabhawong) of Wat Bowonniwet Vihara to rename the temple as “Wat Intharawihan” and this name has been used until today.
Later, the status of the temple was raised from a temple of the people to a royal temple on March 22, 2000, during the reign of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX). It was announced in the Royal Gazette. It was officially announced on June 22, 2000. Wat Inthararam has therefore officially been named “Wat Intharawihan, Royal Temple” until today.
