Wat Phra That Hariphunchai Temple @Lamphun | Lamphun
Wat Phra That Hariphunchai was built in 1651 during the reign of King Athitayarat.
Wat Phra That Hariphunchai Woramahawihan is located in the heart of Lamphun, surrounded by roads on all four sides. It was built in 1651. An interesting thing is the gate arch. Before entering the temple, one must pass through the brick and mortar gate decorated with intricate patterns. It is an ancient work of the Srivijaya period. It consists of a tiered arch. In front of the gate arch is a pair of large lions standing majestically on a pedestal about 1 meter high. This pair of lions was sculpted during the reign of King Athitayarat when he donated the palace to be a royal temple. After passing through the gate arch, you will see a large temple called the royal temple. It is a large temple with a gallery on all sides and a porch at the front and back. It is a newly built temple to replace the old temple, which was destroyed by a storm in 1923.
Located in the heart of Lamphun city, it is surrounded by four roads: Attharot Road to the north, Chai Mongkhon Road to the south, Rop Muang Road to the east, and Inthayongyot Road to the west. It is approximately 150 meters from the provincial hall. It was built in 1651 during the reign of King Athitayarat. Inside the grounds of Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, there is an interesting thing: the gate. Before entering the temple, you will pass through a brick and mortar gate.
It was built during the reign of King Athitayarat when he donated the palace to be a sangkharam or royal temple. After passing through the gate, you will find a large temple called “Wihan Luang” with balconies all around and porches at the front and back. It was built to replace the old temple in 1915 to be used as a place for making merit and performing religious ceremonies every Buddhist holy day. Inside, there are three brick and mortar Buddha statues, lacquered and gilded on glass pedestals, and several medium-sized metal Buddha statues from the early and middle Chiang Saen periods. Phra Borommathat Hariphunchai is located behind the royal chapel, and houses the hair relics of the Buddha in a golden casket. The chedi consists of a lotus-shaped base with a recessed lotus pedestal, followed by a three-tiered round pedestal supporting a round bell-shaped body, and a recessed throne. The chedi is similar in appearance to Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai Province. There are two tiers of satibanchon (a gallery of iron and brass spears), golden ships on the outer fences, both north and south. There are four corners with garlands and umbrellas, and four towers on each side. Each hall contains a seated Buddha image.
Lamphun Address: Rop Mueang Nai Road, Tambon Nai Mueang, Amphoe Mueang, Lamphun Province
