Wat Kalayanamit Woramahawihan temple in Bangkok
Wat Kalayanamit Woramahawihan was built during the reign of King Rama III by Chao Phraya Nikorn Bodin Mahin Maha Kalyanamitra (To) who donated his house and nearby land and built it as a temple in 1825. King Nangklao (Rama III) therefore named it Wat Kalayanamit and built the royal chapel and the principal Buddha image, which is a large Buddha image named Phra Phuttha Trairattanayok or Luang Pho To, with the intention of making it like the old capital, which is to have a large Buddha image outside the city walls like Wat Phanan Choeng in Ayutthaya.
This is a temple that has been with the city of Thonburi, built during the reign of King Nangklao. Originally, Chaophraya Nikhom Bodin (To Kalyanamitra) donated his house and bought additional land to build a temple in 1825 and presented it to King Nangklao, Rama III, who named it Wat Kalayanamit. Later, he built and bestowed both the Royal Vihara and the principal Buddha image for the Royal Vihara, which is Phra Phuttha Trairattanayok (Luang Pho To), which is highly revered, especially among the Chinese. He is called Sam Po Hut Kong or Sam Po Kong. It is a stucco Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya attitude, 5 wah 3 sok wide at the lap and 7 wah 2 sok 10 inches high. It is located in the large Vihara in the middle of the temple. In the middle between the small Vihara and the ordination hall in front of the royal Vihara is a newly built bell tower where the largest giant bell in Thailand is stored. Inside the ordination hall, which is smaller than the vihara, It enshrines the Buddha image in the Palilai posture (Pa Lai Lai) built by King Rama III and bestowed upon him. It is also considered the only temple in Thailand with a principal Buddha image in the Palilai posture. Inside, there are murals showing the life of the Buddha and the way of life of the townspeople during the reign of King Rama III. There is the Phra Thammathian Theling Phra Kiat Hall, which is where the Tripitaka from the reign of King Rama IV is kept.
