Wat Rakhang Khositaram, originally called Wat Bang Wa Yai, is an ancient temple during the Ayutthaya period, along with Wat Bang Wa Noi, which is Wat Amarin Tharam. In 2312, after King Taksin the Great ascended to the throne and established a new capital city called Krung Thonburi, he restored and renovated Wat Bang Wa Yai and elevated it to a royal temple. Later, in the Rattanakosin period, King Rama I carried out a major renovation and excavated a bell, which sounded very melodious. He ordered it to be kept at Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram. He then ordered the construction of a bell tower along with five more bells as a replacement. After the renovation was complete, he gave it a new name: "Wat Rakhang Khositaram".
It is a second-class royal temple, a type of Wora Maha Wihan, built since the Ayutthaya period. Later, during the Thonburi period King Taksin the Great built a palace near Wat Bang Wa Yai, so he ordered its renovation and made it a royal temple. It was the residence of the Supreme Patriarch during the Rattanakosin period and was also the meeting place for the Tripitaka Council, which was brought from Nakhon Si Thammarat. Interesting things in the temple include the Red Palace, which is a teak house with plasterboard walls. It is believed that it was once a meditation palace for King Taksin the Great. Inside the palace, there are references such as the partition walls of the original palace, paintings of various kinds of bad things, and images of monks meditating, which are consistent with King Taksin the Great's personality. However, at present, there are almost no traces of these paintings. - Tripitaka Hall, which is a twin house built from wood dismantled from the original palace and hall of King Rama I when he was still a civil servant in Thonburi. The eaves are shaped like angels in prayer at intervals. The outer walls are painted in red clay.
