“Khuk Khi Kai” is an ancient prison built in 1893 during the French occupation of Chanthaburi. It was constructed to imprison Thai men, though it was reportedly never actually used for that purpose. Built alongside the nearby “Red Building” (Tuek Daeng), the prison featured an upper level designed for raising chickens, allowing their droppings to fall directly onto the heads of the prisoners below.
However, some historians dispute this, arguing that the structure was never intended as a prison but rather as an observation post paired with the Red Building, known as the “French Fort.”
Khuk Khi Kai is a square-shaped fort constructed from red clay bricks, located not far from Laem Sing Beach and the Red Building.
The structure remains in its original state from over a century ago, having never undergone major restoration; only the surrounding walkways and gardens have been landscaped. The entrance is notably low. Khuk Khi Kai stands as a testament to the colonial era, serving as a historical narrative that allows future generations to learn about the impact of Western colonialism on Chanthaburi.
