Wat Khao Bang Sai, or Wat Khao Phra Phutthabat Bang Sai, is said to have been built by a king of Ayutthaya between 2249–2275 BE (1706–1732 CE).
It was a royal temple that flourished for a period before becoming a deserted temple. During the reign of King Rama III, he ordered Somdet Chao Phraya Borom Maha Prayurawong (Dis Bunnag), who at that time held the position of Chao Phraya Phra Khlang (Minister of Finance) and Samuh Klahom (Minister of Defense), to lead an army to suppress the Ang Yee (Chinese secret society) at Wat Khongkhalai, Bang Sai Subdistrict, Mueang Chonburi District. It was an Ayutthaya-era temple that had fallen into disrepair until it was rebuilt during the reign of King Rama IV by Phraya Phichit Chonket, the governor of Chonburi at that time. Interesting features within the temple include the pavilion enshrining the Buddha's footprint and a small building on the hilltop containing a reclining Buddha statue.
