Wat Phra Ram | Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province

Wat Phra Ram is located in the center of Ayutthaya Island, opposite Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit, in Tambon Pratu Chai, Amphoe Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. The Royal Chronicle of Luang Prasat states that Somdet Phra Ramesuan built this temple in 1912 B.E. at the place where the body of his father, King U Thong, was cremated. The construction was completed during the reign of Somdet Phra Borommatrailokanat between 1991 - 2031 B.E. and was named Wat Phra Ram.
▪ In front of the temple is a large pond. It is believed that it was originally small and existed before the establishment of Ayutthaya. It was called Nong Son. Later, when Ayutthaya was established, the soil from Nong Son was dug up to fill the area to build the palace and various temples. Therefore, it became a large pond, as stated in the law of the palace as “Bueng Chi Chan” and later renamed “Bueng Phra Ram”.
▪ Wat Phra Ram has been repaired and additional structures have been built many times in each reign because it is a temple close to the palace. Especially during the reign of King Borommakot, around the year 2284, there was a major renovation of temples throughout Ayutthaya. Wat Phra Ram was probably also repaired at that time. Important ancient sites within the temple include the main prang, the ordination hall, the viharn, and the group of surrounding chedis.
