In 1881, Father John Baptist Prodom and Father Xavier Gego, priests of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, assigned by Bishop Louis Vey to spread Christianity in the northeastern region of Thailand, arrived in Ubon Ratchathani and established a Christian community in Bung Ka Thaew. Then, in June 1883,
Father Prodom and Father Rondel traveled from Ubon Ratchathani to Nakhon Phanom for the first time to survey the routes, the situation, and the lives of the villagers in order to plan future missionary projects. After spending some time surveying the area, including Nong Khai and Vientiane, the two priests returned to Ubon Ratchathani. After celebrating Easter in April 1884,
Father Prodom, Father Gego, and Teacher Than, a Vietnamese seminarian, traveled from Ubon Ratchathani to Nakhon Phanom again and established a Christian community there.
This community is located within the largest Catholic village in Thailand. The Cathedral of the Archangel Michael is beautifully shaped like a ship. This shape was built to commemorate the migration and settlement of Christians in the village. It's a must-see landmark in Tha Rae.
